Short Description

Dog friendly Sidmouth walk submitted by John Davis.

Long Description

When the beaches are off limits to dogs in the summer this area is the go-to spot for owners and their pooches. Close to the town is Salcombe Road with its entrance to the parkland next to the Byes Toll House. Initially walkers find themselves in a splendid park bursting with mature trees which is bisected by the normally placid Rider Sid. Walking towards the village of Sidford, walkers can deviate into a relatively newly acquired area which includes a community orchard (dog-free) and wildflower meadows. Rejoining the course of the Sid a gate on the right soon leads into Margarets Meadow, a large area perfect for off-lead walking. There are a number of opportunities to rest on benches while your dog continues to explore, particularly in the delightful Golden Copse. Towards the right-hand side of the meadow look out for gates which take the walker down to the river through delightful woods. If you still have energy, rejoin the footpath (shared with a cycleway) as far as Sidford, where you will find two pubs for refreshment. All in all the walk is only about a mile as the crow flies but can easily be extended within the park area. Although very well frequented by dogs and their owners I have found most to be well socialised and friendly (and that's just the owners!).
